Two expeditions will attempt QO-100 from Canada

Canada is not covered by the satellite QO-100. However, satellite operators know, that under favorable conditions a connection is possible even below the horizon.

VO1/M0XUU

He will try the QO-100 first Gopan VU3HPF/M0XUU, which will be from the island of Newfoundland QRV May 8-15. The GN37 locator is located 1° below the horizon.

His setup will be a transverter with IC705 (Pluto + SDR as a backup), modified LNB, GPSDO, 2 threaded (YATT)hHelix, SG Labs amplifier and 80cm dish (maybe 1m).

He expects, that the signals will be weak and have deep QSB, so the primary mode will be CW. It also has FT8/FT4 setup, but that one will be experimental.

UPDATED: Gopan VO1/M0XUU from Newfoundland picked up QO-100 signals, so the chance of operation is real:

VO1/G0MRF a VO1/G3VZV

Subsequently, David G0MRF and Graham G3VZV will also travel to St John's Newfoundland in May, to test the operation of the QO-100 from below the horizon. With QTH entering St John’s Harbour, GN37PN85 plan to start the activity on Wednesday 15. of May and ending on Sunday 19. may 2024.
