Hi, does anyone have experience with a switched power supply for powering LED strips, I want to connect it to the TRX. Thank you, Jozo

Hi, do you have experience whether I can pass that way with my red car?

      Type of switched power supply?
      Type of radio?
      Used bands?

For VHF/UHF FM TRX, some similar sources can be used, but for HF it is not so rosy.

The source is Mean Well RSP 320-12 and the TRX is TS120S, so HF 80 to 10m. Thanks, Jozef

You can connect it, as long as it doesn't induce on the 12V RF line, nothing should happen to the radio, but for safety, I would put a few 16V transils in parallel on the output and I would at least thread the cables through a few turns around a larger toroid. Induced RF into the power supply from TX can cause an increase in output voltage.

Whether and how much it will interfere with RX, you have to find out yourself. That power supply is not designed for HF radio.

Thanks for the advice, I will try it, the power supply converted from a PC has already failed, it is only until I have a classic power supply. I will see, I might temporarily support it with a battery.

Just one note, some radios at 12V give less power or their modulation is distorted. Especially new devices are sensitive to this fact and need the 13.8 V. Then it can appear as if HF penetrates the source. You need to hook the filter, e.g. from some radio and IC 706 and put it between the source and the radio. Everything is a matter of experimentation, because every case is different.

All these resources are practically made the same. I have been using the source without problems for four years with the IC-706MKII (digimody). Setting the voltage to 13.8V is a matter of turning one trimmer. Closer to http://www.ok1cjb.cz/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=671:3-710&catid=18:napajeni&Itemid=7.

I use a modified power supply from a computer (2x22ohm 5w resistor in parallel in the 5V branch, fixed from the inside on the grid of the power supply box) for mobile FM and 10m CB radio, and no one has ever complained about bad modulation or hum. The source can also be selected from a discarded computer or, at worst, bought for €15.

Thanks for all the info, I'm going to install it today, it's basically a raw part with an open terminal block for mains voltage, so I have to wire it safely, I'll try what it will do reinforced with an autobattery and if it works, it will go into the cabinet with current measurement.

Hi Jozef, the Mean Well RSP 320-12 power source can deliver 26A so be careful with a car battery, it is not recommended to charge more than 0.2C (this means that the battery should have >130Ah). It depends on the type, whether it can be topped up, but if the temperature exceeds 0.2C, goodies will be released into the air.
Definitely do not 'overpower' with an uncharged 40Ah...

I have been running on battery power for over 15 years, 40Ah maintenance-free, 5A charger from an old NMT permanently connected through a socket, it only charges when I am in the hamshack.
I do have a 25A SNZ for the TRX, but it is gathering dust on the shelf, its fan bothers me 😉.

As OM3CVV pointed out, when powering from a lower voltage, which is also the case when running from an ACCU, you need to have the smallest losses (contact resistances) on cables, fuses, and terminals (very common problems are fuse holders and 5m cables). This means the radio should be connected directly to the ACCU.
Also, the TRX needs more care and to 'tighten' the idle currents of the final (it is optimal for some types of 'auto' radios to set them a bit higher).

Warm thanks for the extensive info, so far I am absolutely satisfied with the source, the battery connection has to wait now, there is still work on the antennas in the snow. The battery as a large capacity is tempting, due to reception. Then I will write my experiences. Thanks, Jozef 1LA.

      Good day gentlemen,

Until recently, I used a desktop station (FT 747GX, 100W) on HF 80-10m with a modified PC power supply, which has now served its time (the capacitor blew). Therefore, I am currently thinking about what to do next and considering the following options:
      – repair the PC power supply (or modify another one for the same purpose)
      – buy (or assemble a power supply that contains a transformer)
      – buy a factory switch-mode power supply that is intended for transceivers: http://aku-bat.cz/g3713.Power+AVAIR+13.8+VDC+25+A,+825+WM.html
      – buy a switch-mode power supply for LED strips: http://www.google.sk/search?q=switch-mode+power+supply+for+led&client=ms-opera-mini-android&site=webhp&prmd=imvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjL18r-nf7TAhXBKCYKHfjkCekQ_AUICSgB&biw=360&bih=536#imgrc=DFORPTqlQgzkxM:
      – I have caught that someone uses a lead-acid battery, which is charged when the operator does not use the station (eliminates interference)

Of course, I try to balance the economic aspect and the properties, i.e., I do not want interference in the station.

      Thank you for the advice.

Every switch-mode power supply produces interference. Sometimes it is noticeable even during reception in the form of echoes, hums, and noise.

It is worse during transmission, where the current drawn is larger and unwanted impulses go directly to the power transistors of the PA. This way, we transfer interference through the antenna into the ether. The explanation is in section 7:http://www.ok2kkw.com/qrm2vpz.htm

I definitely recommend a classic transformer power supply with good stabilization. Among the cheaper ones, the following are usable: http://www.rmitaly.com/index.php/en/products/linear-power-supplies after adding a cooling fan.

      Hello,

I use this http://elix.cz/product/alinco-dm-330-fx-2530a-regulated-meridian-av/ and I don't have the slightest problem, an excellent thing is the possibility to set the clock frequency of the source to remove possible products (this has happened to me about 2 times in 10 years).
