Orionidy 2005

Twice a year, our planet encounters a parent current from Halley's Comet. It's the first time in May, when the swarm eta-Aquarid is active. Druhýkrát to bude v najbližších dňoch, keď nastáva maximum Orioníd.

Roj je aktívny od 2.októbra do 22.novembra 2005, pričom maximum očakávame 21.októbra v ranných hodinách. The fibrous structure of the swarm causes the maximum not to be very sharp, or it is possible to speak of several maxima, which last for several days. ZHR is estimated at 20 – 25. The radiant swarm is located in the northeastern part of the constellation Orion, 5 degrees west of a second-sized star called Alhena (or Gamma Geminorum).

Orionids are the second fastest swarm after the Leonids, they enter the atmosphere at speed 66 km/s. There are quite a few small particles in the swarm. Like other fast meteors, they leave traces of visible seconds to minutes in the sky. When looking at the radiant, the observer sees short meteors, while focusing on a quarter of the sky from that point, registers long and very fast meteors.
