Senegal and hamradio
Senegal, officially the Republic of Senegal, is located on the west coast of Africa and borders Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the enclave of Gambia. Its capital, Dakar, is located on the westernmost point of the African continent – Cape Verde. The country is known for its stable political situation, diverse culture and hospitality of its inhabitants. French is the official language, reflecting the colonial past, and the economy is based on agriculture, fishing and services.
Although the amateur radio community in Senegal is not numerous, it is very active and open to cooperation with international operators. Domestic radio amateurs operate under the prefix 6W, while the most famous figure is 6W1QL, a longtime member of the Senegalese amateur scene. Due to the favorable location of the country and low interference, Senegalese stations are popular targets for DX connections, especially on the 20 and 15 meter bands.
Foreign DX expeditions also often go to Senegal. These expeditions bring the opportunity to establish rare connections with Africa while promoting radio amateurs as a form of technical and cultural exchange between continents. Senegal thus remains an interesting point on the world DXing map.
