The Azores are an archipelago of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic, belonging to Portugal. The islands stretch for a distance of almost 500 kilometers from east to west and offer breathtaking nature, thermal springs and unique flora. Thanks to their strategic location between Europe and America, they historically served as an important navigation and trade stop.
For radio amateurs, the Azores represent one DXCC entitu s prefixom CU, pričom každý z deviatich ostrovov má vlastné číselné označenie – od CU1 Santa Maria až po CU9 Corvo. Výborná geografická poloha a minimálne rušenie robia z ostrovov obľúbenú destináciu pre DX expeditions a contestové stanice. Rádioamatéri na Azoroch tiež zohrávajú dôležitú úlohu pri budovaní medziostrovnej núdzovej komunikačnej siete, čo je kľúčové pre súostrovie ležiace na tektonických zlomoch náchylných na zemetrasenia.
