Panama
Panama, often referred to as the 'Crossroads of the World,' is a country of fascinating contrasts. This narrow strip of land not only geographically connects North and South America, but its iconic canal represents a 20th-century technical marvel that dramatically shortened the routes between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The capital, Panama City, is a perfect example: a dazzling, modern skyline of skyscrapers meets colonial charm and narrow streets of the historic Casco Viejo district, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
However, the country offers much more than just the famous canal. Beyond the urban hustle and bustle, almost impenetrable rainforests with stunning biodiversity stretch out, home to toucans, monkeys, and sloths. From Caribbean beaches and mangroves in Bocas del Toro to the Pacific archipelago of San Blas, autonomously managed by the indigenous Guna people, Panama is a paradise for nature lovers.
The climate here is typically tropical - hot and very humid all year round. There are only two main seasons: the long rainy season (from May to December) with intense rainfall, and the shorter, sunny dry season, which locals call 'verano' (summer).
The people of Panama are as diverse as its nature. It is a warm mix of cultures, where Spanish heritage blends with the traditions of seven indigenous tribes and strong Afro-Caribbean influences. They are known for their friendly, relaxed nature and love for music and dance.
This unique location, where the world meets, also attracts technical enthusiasts. It is therefore not surprising that in this exotic country, radio waves can sometimes be heard when local radio amateurs (with the prefix HP) try to connect from their islands or from the depths of the jungle to the rest of the world.
