Haiti earthquake 2010
The earthquake in Haiti, which occurred on January 15, 2010, is one of the most devastating natural disasters in the country's modern history. It had a magnitude of 7.0 MW and the epicenter was approximately 25 km southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince. This tremor caused massive damage in and around the city, including the complete collapse of buildings, hospitals, schools and government offices. More than 230,000 people are estimated to have died, with hundreds of thousands more injured and millions left homeless.
Immediately after the disaster, a large-scale humanitarian response began, involving international organizations, governments, and non-profit groups. The aid consisted in the delivery of food, water, medical care and temporary accommodation for the victims. The earthquake also exposed Haiti's weak infrastructure and vulnerability to natural disasters.
The tragedy sparked global solidarity and highlighted the need for long-term recovery and improved disaster preparedness in the Caribbean region. Even a decade after the earthquake, Haiti still has a difficult path of recovery and development ahead of it.
