A group of experienced operators from Italy announced their ambitious goal for February 2026. Under the call sign 8R1WA will be active from February 19 to 27, 2026 will be active from Guyana - a country that, while not at the top of the most wanted entities list, still represents a valuable 'notch' in the log for many, especially on the lower bands and in digital modes.
The team consisting of IZØEGA, IZØEVI, IZØEWJ and IZ6DSQ is preparing for an intensive nine-day operation aimed at satisfying the demand of thousands of radio amateurs from around the world.
In the article you will read
Destination of 8R1WA trip: Guyana
Guyana, the only English-speaking country in South America, is known for its pristine nature and dense rainforests. For radio amateurs, it is a location that offers excellent conditions for signal propagation towards North America and Europe.
The 8R1WA expedition will focus on maximizing the number of contacts in a relatively short time window. Their presence on the bands will be especially important for award hunters (DXCC,IOTA) and participants of various amateur radio contests that may be taking place during this time.
Team and operational philosophy
The Italian team is no newcomer in the amateur radio world. The members of the group have extensive experience from previous activations and DX expeditions:
Nello, IZØEGA (Team Leader):skúsený operátor a manažér, ktorý zastrešuje logistiku a QSL agendu.
IZØEVI, IZØEWJ and IZ6DSQ: Operators who form the core of the team, focused on a high pace of work in pile-ups.

My strategy is clear: To be online as long as possible. With three operators in operation, they plan to cover a wide spectrum of frequencies and ensure presence on the bands during both day and night, utilizing specific propagation windows for individual continents.
Technical equipment and modes
Expedition 8R1WA will be active on all amateur radio bands from 160m to 6m.
Modes: The main emphasis will be placed on SSBaFT8.
In FT8, the team will use Fox & Hound mode, which allows for efficient handling of a large number of stations at once.
SSB operation will be directed mainly to the upper bands (10m, 15m, 20m), where the strongest signals are expected.
Antennas: According to the plans published on the website, vertical antennas placed near water (if the location allows) and directional antennas of the type will be a key element spiderbeam or hexbeam for the upper bands.
Power: The use of end stages will ensure that the signal from Guyana will be readable even for stations with simpler equipment.

Logistics and QSL info 8R1WA
Operation from Guyana brings its challenges - from tropical humidity to instability of the power grid. However, the team is equipped with backup solutions to minimize downtime.
For all who manage to establish a connection, the following confirmation options are available:
LoTW (Logbook of the World): The fastest way to confirm connections into electronic diplomas.
ClubLogOQRS: Option to request a paper QSL card (directly or through bureau).
QSL Manager IZØEGA: Traditional way through the mailbox for lovers of classic cards.
Why call 8R1WA?
Although Guyana is not as rare as for example Bouvet Island, in some bands (especially 160m and 80m) 8R is still very desirable. Moreover, thanks to the Italian team, we can expect excellent operators' 'hearing' and a fair approach to pile-ups. For stations from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, Guyana will be best available in the evening and night hours on the lower bands and during the day on 10m/12m/15m.
Tip for successful connection: Watch DX cluster and the official website guyana2026.wordpress.com, where current frequencies and potential changes in the plan will be published. If you are calling on FT8, make sure you have the correct time set (sync) and are using the correct split.
