Atauro Island - East Timor
Atauro Island, whose name means "goat" in the local Tetun language, lies approximately 25 kilometers north of East Timor's capital, Dili. This volcanic island with an area of about 140 km² has been proud of the status of an independent municipality since 2022. It is primarily known as the world's TOP destination for diving and snorkeling.
The waters surrounding Atauro are considered by leading scientists to be the area with the greatest underwater biodiversity in the world. Under the surface, there are up to 643 species of fish and a record number of coral species, thanks to which the island is often referred to as the most beautiful natural aquarium.
However, Atauro also offers experiences on land. Tourists looking for authenticity and unspoiled nature can complete the challenging ascent to the highest point of the island, Mount Manukoko (999 m above sea level). The road to the top offers unique views and the opportunity to observe rare endemic bird species.
The tourist infrastructure here is minimal, which contributes to the authentic atmosphere. Although East Timor is historically Catholic, many of Atauro's 10,300 residents are Protestant, a peculiarity due to the influence of Dutch missionaries in the past. The island, long overshadowed by a grim history of prisons and conflicts, today retains its pristine face and authentic character thanks to its more difficult accessibility.
