Peter I Island
Peter I Island, also known as Peter I Island, is a small, remote island located in the southern part of the Southern Ocean, about 450 km from Antarctica and about 1,400 km from South Georgia. This subantarctic island belongs to Norway and, together with Bouvet Island and Dronning Maud Land Island, forms part of Norway's interest in the Antarctic region. The island is of volcanic origin and its area is approximately 156 km². The highest point of the island is the Lars Christensen volcano, which reaches a height of 1,640 meters above sea level.
The island is permanently covered with ice and snow, while its coast consists mainly of steep and rocky cliffs. The climate is extremely harsh, with frequent storms, strong winds and cold temperatures, making human presence and any permanent settlement difficult. Due to these unfavorable conditions, the island is uninhabited and is primarily used for scientific purposes.
Thanks to its isolation and harsh climate, Peter I Island remains one of the least explored and most mysterious places on Earth. Scientists and researchers who visit here face extreme challenges, but the data obtained are invaluable for understanding climate processes and volcanic phenomena in this part of the world.
