satellite
Radio amateurs have been using satellites as long-distance radio signal transmitters for decades. A satellite always carries a beacon that usually transmits telemetry data and sometimes a transponder. Such a transmitter listens on one frequency and transmits on another. Popular satellites include the Soviet RS-12/13, the Japanese FO-20 and FO-29, the Indian VU-52, or the AMSAT AO-7, AO-27. These satellites are often referred to as LEO satellites for low-earth orbit. Working via satellites requires both technical and operator skills on VHF.
Currently, a geostationary satellite with a range from Indonesia to South America, QO-100, is also available to radio amateurs.
