Suriname

Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is a small country on the northeastern coast of South America. With an area of approximately 163,000 square kilometers, it is the smallest independent country on this continent. It borders French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south, while the northern coast stretches along the Atlantic Ocean.
Suriname is the only country in South America where Dutch is used as an official language. This linguistic peculiarity is a legacy of the colonial past when Suriname was a Dutch colony. It gained independence in 1975. The capital and largest urban center is Paramaribo, whose historic center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.
Krajina sa vyznačuje mimoriadnou etnickou a kultúrnou rozmanitosťou. Obyvateľstvo tvorí pestrá zmes potomkov afrických otrokov, indicko-indonézskych prisťahovalcov, pôvodných amerindských kmeňov, Číňanov a Európanov. Viac ako 90 percent územia pokrýva neporušený tropický dažďový prales, čo z neho robí jednu z ekologicky najbohatších krajín sveta.
