The January round is often a test of patience and technical readiness. Long nights and increased levels of interference on the lower bands thoroughly tested the skills of all listeners involved. In this year's first competition, a diverse international lineup of eight operators participated, who sent their diaries for evaluation. Although the field of competitors is only being formed, the initial results already indicate that the year 2013 will be extremely interesting.

The absolute sovereign of the first stage was Vladimir Ignatov, competing under the brand R3A-847. With his performance, for which he earned a respectable 22,736 points, he gave the competition almost no chance and created a massive lead right at the start of the season. His score is proof of not only excellent QTH, but above all enormous endurance and experience, which play a key role in this race.
However, the fight for second place had a much more traumatic course. Here, a real radio drama took place between Dutch listener Sjuk Veenstra (NL6904) and Slovak representative Jozef Marcincák (OM3-0001). In the end, the difference between them was only minimal. NL6904, with a gain of 12,054 points, surpassed our Jozef by only 100 points, which is a statistically insignificant difference with thousands of points, but in the final accounting he decided on the silver and bronze rungs.

The rest of the starting field was also not idle. In fourth place was Helmut Grund (DE2HUG) from Germany with 2,760 points, followed by Johan Heus (NL9723). Marc Stinkens (ONL4638) from Belgium, Sergej Rogov (MA3031SWL) also entered the table, and a more exotic variety was the participation of the Turkish listener Sencer Sari (TA2-34-021). Since it was the first stage, the ranking in this round also copies the current overall ranking of the SLP Competition 2013. However, the season is still at the beginning and the cards remain open.
