South Sudan, also known as South Sudan, is an autonomous region in the southern part of Sudan that will become an independent country on July 9, 2011. Its capital is Juba. It borders Ethiopia to the east, Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the south, and the Central African Republic to the west.
South Sudan's independence referendum was held on 9–15 January 2011. Preliminary results released by the South Sudan Referendum Commission on 30 January 2011 show that 98% of voters chose the "separation" option, while 1% chose the "unity" option. Final results were announced on February 7, with 98.83% of voters in favor of secession. The President of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, accepted the results and issued a republican decree confirming the result of the referendum. South Sudan is expected to become an independent country on July 9, 2011.
