Benin
Benin is a West African country located on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, between Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Niger. It has an area of approximately 112 thousand km² and is inhabited by more than 13 million inhabitants. The capital is Porto-Novo, but the real administrative and economic center is Cotonou.
The history of Benin is closely linked with the kingdom of Dahomey, which was a powerful state in the 17th and 19th centuries, also known for its slave trade. Later, the territory became a French colony, and after gaining independence in 1960, it bore the name Dahomey until 1975, when it was renamed Benin.
Benin is a democratic republic that is considered one of the more politically stable countries in the region. The economy is based on agriculture - mainly cotton, corn and palm oil. Tourism has also been developing in recent years, as the country offers a rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
Among the most important attractions are the city of Ouidah, associated with the history of slavery, the Pendjari National Park with its rich fauna, as well as the traditional festivals and rituals associated with the voodoo faith, which has strong roots in Benin.
