Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is a small West African country with an area of approximately 72,000 km², located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital is Freetown, founded in 1787 as a haven for freed slaves. The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961.

The nature of Sierra Leone is extremely rich. The country boasts beautiful beaches, tropical rainforests and diverse fauna, including chimpanzees and rare bird species. The name of the state comes from Portuguese and means "Lion Hill", which refers to the mountainous coastal relief.
The economy of the country relies mainly on the mining of mineral resources, especially diamonds, bauxite and rutile. Unfortunately, Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world, which is also a consequence of the devastating civil war in the years 1991-2002. The population consists of approximately 8 million inhabitants of various ethnic groups, with the Temne and Mende being the most numerous.
Of interest to tech enthusiasts, Sierra Leone has an active ham radio community. The country uses the call prefix 9L, which makes it an interesting destination for international radio amateur expeditions. Radio amateurs from all over the world try to connect with stations in Sierra Leone because it is a relatively rare country on the airwaves. Local radio amateurs thus help to overcome the digital divide and keep the country connected to the world.
Despite many challenges, Sierra Leone is gradually building its future. The country is working to restore infrastructure, improve education and develop tourism while preserving its rich cultural identity and traditions.
