Aland Islands

The Åland Islands are an archipelago in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, which forms an autonomous region belonging to Finland. The islands consist of approximately 6,700 islands, of which about 60 are permanently inhabited. The capital is Mariehamn, which also serves as the main port and administrative center. Åland has a Finnish and Swedish cultural identity, with Swedish being the official language.
The history of the islands is rich - for centuries they were a strategic place between Sweden and Russia and are still famous for their fortresses and historical monuments. The nature is beautiful, with pine forests, rocky coasts and lots of bird life. Hiking, sailing and fishing are among the most popular activities. The islands are also a sought-after destination for radio amateurs, who regularly undertake DX-expeditions here, giving Aland a unique place on the map of the radio amateur community.
