Åland Islands

The Åland Islands are an archipelago in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland, forming an autonomous region of Finland. The islands consist of approximately 6,700 islands, of which about 60 are permanently inhabited. The capital is Mariehamn, which also serves as the main port and administrative center. The Åland Islands have a Finnish and Swedish cultural identity, with Swedish being the official language.
The islands have a rich history - for centuries they were a strategic point between Sweden and Russia, and are still known for their fortresses and historical monuments. The nature is beautiful, with pine forests, rocky coasts and an abundance of birdlife. Hiking, sailing and fishing are among the most popular activities. The islands are also a popular destination for radio amateurs, who regularly go on DX expeditions, which gives Åland a unique place on the map of the radio amateur community.
