Receiving weather images (section 4.)

The author of a series of articles on the reception of NOAA meteorological images is Ondro (zawin), The original article can be found at www.svetelektro.com. TNX!

In the last part of the series on receiving meteorological images, I will focus on decoding images on a computer using the program WXtoIMG. I will describe the basic functions of the program and the connection of the receiver to the sound card. Finally, you can look forward to an image gallery, which I have received with this receiver 🙂

When decoding images on a computer, I tried a number of programs for this function. I have to say, that WXtoIMG stood out among all the programs, which I use so far.

You can download the program from http://www.wxtoimg.com/

After installing the program, the program will ask for your location, if you do not know the exact GPS coordinates of your city, so just enter Bratislava, months for binding reasons. The deviation from the actual position is then reflected, when the program additionally draws a border into the image. This sets the program and you can start receiving. Using the Orbitron program, which I described in the first part of the series we will find out the nearest satellites and their frequencies. When the satellite flies over the horizon and we have the right frequency tuned, we should hear an amplitude modulated signal with a frequency of 2400Hz in the speaker - signal sample.
Then all you have to do is make an audio cable ,where we connect the signal from the speaker with the LINE-IN of the computer.

If we hear such a signal, everything is fine and we can decode 🙂

Giant. no. 1: Manual and automatic mode

The program works in 2 modes - manual and automatic.
Manual - we call it File -> Record -> Manual test; I don't really use this mode then, when the satellite is already flying and I want to decode the signal.
Automatically - we call it File -> Record -> Auto Record; The program regularly updates the flight time and automatically starts recording only then, when a satellite is above the horizon. In automatic mode, it is necessary to set in Options - Recording Options; data from which satellite elevation the program should start recording automatically.

Giant. No.2: Elevation adjustment

When recording, we monitor the volume level LINE-IN, to make the value green. When the recording is complete, the program automatically processes the raw data, the image is additionally colored, adds borders to states.
