Fernando de Noronha
Fernando de Noronha is a volcanic archipelago of 21 islands and reefs located approximately 350 km off the northeast coast of Brazil in the Atlantic Ocean. The main island has an area of only 17 km² and is the only inhabited island of the archipelago with a population of around 3000 inhabitants.
Discovered in 1503 by the Portuguese explorer Americo Vespucci, the island has served as a prison, a military base, and today is a protected UNESCO National Marine Park. Fernando de Noronha is considered one of the most beautiful tropical islands in the world with breathtaking beaches, crystal clear water and abundant marine life.
For radio amateurs, the island is desirable DXCC entity with the prefix PY0F. Access to the island is strictly regulated to protect the unique ecosystem - visitors pay a daily environmental tax and the number of tourists is limited. The island is a paradise for divers who can observe dolphins, turtles, sharks and colorful coral reefs.
