Suriname
Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is the smallest independent state in South America, located on the northeast coast of the continent. Although often overlooked, this country offers a fascinating mix of culture, history and unspoiled nature.
The capital and economic center is Paramaribo, whose historic center is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city's architecture is a unique example of Dutch colonial architecture using local materials.
Suriname has an extremely rich history. It was the former Dutch Guiana and only gained independence in 1975. Due to its colonial past, the official language here is Dutch, but the population also speaks Sranan Tongo, Hindustani and Javanese. This linguistic diversity reflects a multi-ethnic society, made up of descendants of Indian, African, Javanese, Chinese, European and indigenous peoples.
More than 80% of Suriname's territory is covered by the Amazon rainforest, making it one of the greenest countries in the world. This vast area is home to incredible biodiversity, including the Central Suriname National Park, which is also protected by UNESCO.
