Transnistria (or incorrectly Transnistria or Transnistria), the long form of the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic, is an internationally unrecognized but otherwise de facto independent state declared in early 1992 in Moldova on the territory with a Russian population on the left bank of the Dniester River. From the perspective of Moldova, this is the region of Moldova under the name Transnistrian Moldavian Republic. It has an area of 4,163 km² and about 555,500 inhabitants.
The independence of Transnistria has not yet been recognized by any state or international organization. In the winter of 1991-1992, a short war took place between the Moldovan army and the Transnistrian armed forces, which were supported by the Soviet 14th Army, located in Transnistria. The war ended in a stalemate, as the Moldavian army was not strong enough to overcome the Transnistrian armed groups.
