Data from the analyzed set of spots from the 50 MHz band show that the end of May 24 and the transition to the beginning of the 2026 Es season brought very lively activity. Connections in the range of 50,000–52,000 MHz with an estimated QRB above 1200 km were filtered.

Why is Es so attractive on 6 meters?
The sporadic E layer is fascinating from an amateur radio perspective because it allows for efficient propagation over distances of approximately 1000 to 2500 km per hop, with multi-hop scenarios able to push QRB significantly further.
The practical significance is immediately obvious:

Interesting connections from the 24th and the beginning of the 2026 season
The analyzed dataset contains 1474 spots over 1200 km, which in itself shows a very decent start to the season.
European Union opening
The classic European Es pattern was very visible. For example, the following combinations appeared:
- EA1CQ – HB9FAP (~1240 km)
- CT2IBC – OE4WHG (~2042 km)
- CQ0ODX – OE4WHG (~2042 km)
This is exactly typical Es behavior: Iberian Peninsula towards Central Europe. Such openings are very interesting for Slovak stations, because the JN98/JN99 region has a good geometric profile in similar situations.
Transatlantic surprises
When the magic band goes full blast, the line between 'local' VHF and serious DX becomes blurred.
In the data we see, for example:
- UT4XU – WW1L (~9066 km)
- UT5YGR – K1TOL (~9066 km)
- UX5UO – WW1L (~9066 km)
This is no longer a simple single-hop Es. Here, multi-hop Es, or Es + another ionospheric mechanism, was probably combined. However, it cannot be ruled out that these are erroneous decodings.
South America to Europe
The spots from South America were also particularly interesting:
- CE2SV – UR3QCW (~13,381 km)
- CE3SX – SM7FJE (~12,721 km)
- CE2EP – DH8BQA (~11,971 km)
- PY2XB – SM7FJE (~9977 km)
Such QRBs clearly show that 6m is not just a 'big VHF'. With the right combination of conditions, it becomes a full-fledged DX band.
Asian direction
The direction JA → Europe also appeared:
- JA7QVI – F4CXO (~9889 km)
This is exactly the type of spot that will cause immediate QSY on 50.313 MHz and accelerated waterfall monitoring.
What setup is sufficient for Es on 6 meters?
Dobrá správa je, že Es nevyžaduje extrémny hamshack . Na bežnú prevádzku úplne postačuje:
- TCVR with 50 MHz (100 W class is more than enough),
- malá yagi , Moxon alebo aj jednoduchý Dipól ,
- decent coaxial with reasonable losses,
- FT8/FT4 softvér alebo CW/SSB prevádzka .
Typický setup typu IC-7300, FT-DX10, IC-7100, FT-991A alebo transvertor + kv TCVR je úplne použiteľný. Ak niekto ide QRP , ani to nie je problém. Es často odmení aj 10–20 wattov, pokiaľ je timing správny.
Pre DIGIMODES je kľúčová presná synchronizácia času, ideálne cez NTP alebo GPSDO , hoci pri FT8 to nie je také kritické ako pri EME .
Na SSB a CW treba mať pripravené VFO , sledovať DX cluster a reagovať rýchlo. Otvorenie môže trvať hodiny, ale aj len pár minút.

The start of the 2026 Es season shows that 6 meters are coming back to life in a big way. European Es, transatlantic openings and extreme DX spots towards South America confirm that the magic band is not losing its reputation.
