The history of one of the most famous DX bulletins in the world, 425 DX News, began very inconspicuously – at the meetings of a small group of Italian radio amateurs who called themselves the “425 DX Gang”. Their regular venue was the frequency 145.425 MHz on the 2 meter band, where they exchanged current news about DX activities and distant contacts. The number “425” later became a symbol of the entire community and still forms the basis of the bulletin’s name.

From local meetings to a national infonet
Initially, it was only about local contacts in the area of call zone 1. Gradually, however, it became clear that radio amateurs from other parts of Italy were also interested in this information. The 2 m band was no longer suitable, so the "gang" moved to the HF bands - first to 10 m and later to 80 m, where they started organizing a weekly information net. This became the first coordinated source of DX news for the Italian community.
The Packet Radio Era and the Birth of the Newsletter
In the early 1990s, Packet Radio was rapidly developing in Italy and the PacketCluster network was becoming increasingly reliable. It was then that the natural idea came to create a written bulletin, which was called "425 DX News" - in memory of the original frequency of 145.425 MHz.
Between May 1991 and March 1995, the bulletin was published in Italian and distributed via BBS and PCL networks. This move allowed for faster dissemination of news and the involvement of a wider circle of radio amateurs.
Internet, English and the global dimension

Development and other projects
Since June 2010, the mailing list [425eng] has been operating via Google Groups, and is managed by Stefano Turci, IK4WMH. The bulletin is also available via other mailing lists, such as [DX IS] on Yahoo Groups, and even in other languages - it has been translated into Russian for a long time by Alexander Venderovich, UA9MHN.
In addition to the main newsletter, additional projects were also created:
-
425 Magazine, founded by Maurizio Bertolino (I1-21171) and later developed by Nicola Baldresca (IZ3EBA).
-
Software by Leonardo Lastrucci (IZ5FSA) that allows you to browse the 425DXN archive directly via PacketCluster or a web interface.

International recognition
The editors' long-term work has not gone unnoticed. In May 2007, the editors of 425 DX News were inducted into the CQ DX Hall of Fame - the prestigious DXing Hall of Fame. They were awarded for their "outstanding and selfless contribution to the development of amateur radio DXing."
Conclusion
The story of 425 DX News shows how a small group of enthusiasts who met on a local FM frequency grew into one of the most respected DX bulletins in the world. Through dedication, technical innovation and a passion for DXing, 425 DX News today connects thousands of radio amateurs worldwide and remains a reliable source of information on DX activities.
