Dominica (not the Dominican Republic) is a small island state in the Caribbean between Guadeloupe and Martinique at the coordinates 15°20′ N, 61°22′ W. With an area of 751 km² and the nickname "Nature Isle of the Caribbean", it belongs to the least touristic islands in the region. For radio amateurs, Dominica is a separate DXCC subject with the prefix J7 in CQ zone 08 and ITU zone 11. The island's location in the Lesser Antilles provides good access to both North and South America, and at the same time allows for the propagation of connections with Europe and Africa on the 10 to 20 m bands. The IOTA reference of the island is NA-101.

An island with 365 rivers
Dominica is shaped by intense volcanic activity – the island has nine active volcanoes, one of the highest concentrations in the world, and its coastline is lined with black volcanic sand beaches. The highest point is Morne Diablotin. Inland is Boiling Lake, the second largest hot lake in the world, part of the UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park.
The island has 365 rivers, which is an extraordinary density of watercourses for its size. The capital is Roseau on the southwest coast, the original inhabitants of the Caribs called the island Waitukubuli. For operation from the coast, it is essential that tropical vegetation and a humid climate create specific conditions - salt corrosion, high humidity and occasional storms are factors that the operator has to reckon with when building the antenna.
J79FS activity from Calibishia
Fred DH5FS je na Dominike aktívny od 15. do 27. októbra 2026 pod značkou J79FS. It operates from Calibishia, a village on the north-east coast of the island where steep cliffs jut into the Atlantic. According to current spots, J79FS is audible on bands 10, 12, 15, 17 and 20 metrov v móde SSB. Dvanásťdňový pobyt pokrýva dva contestové víkendy – nemecký WAG contest a medzinárodný CQ WW SSB Contest, in both cases as Single Operator.
Experienced dispatch operator
It's not Fred's first time on the island - his list of previous activations includes FO/DH5FS from French Polynesia, E6FS from Niue, T2C from Tuvalu, 3D2FS from Fiji, S79/DH5FS from the Seychelles and E51SFS from the Cook Islands. It is therefore an operator that has operated from several remote Pacific and Indian Ocean locations. The Caribbean is different in terms of propagation conditions – shorter routes to Europe (around 7,000 km vs 15,000+ km from the Pacific) mean stronger signals and more competition for frequencies. This brings a denser pile-up and more demanding traffic on popular bands, where caller management experience decides the pace.
QSL J79FS and connection confirmation
The QSL route goes directly through home tag DH5FS. Fred uses Club Log with the OQRS (Online QSL Request System) function, which is a standard and efficient way for dispatch operations to process confirmations. The log will be uploaded to the Club Log upon return and stations that have established contact with J79FS can request a QSL card directly through the online system without having to send a paper card in advance. Connections will be applicable to DXCC credits, IOTA (NA-101) and relevant WAG and CQ WW SSB contest results.
Dominica is among the less activated Caribbean DXCC entities - most expeditions go here precisely during the contest season from October to November, when the propagation conditions on the higher KV bands towards Europe reach their seasonal maximum. J79FS offers an opportunity for European stations to work a relatively rare Caribbean entity in SSB on several bands.
