Detention of Baldur Drobnica DJ6SI on the island of Kos
In May of that year, I arranged a week-long trip to the island of KOS in Geécko. I took the KV station with me , to give DX- manom zone points or possibly even a new land. With the permission of the hotel management, I installed a G5RV antenna.
After three days, Fr 1. In the middle of the night, my wife and I were woken up by five plainclothes policemen and a lawyer .
The wife suffers from Alzheimer's disease and has passed 3 pypasy. I was charged because I used radio communication without a Greek license. The second charge was, that I could monitor "other" frequencies with my TRCV FT-890AT! My objection,that I broadcast legally based on the terms of the CEPT was rejected!! The hotel manager printed the CEPT list, which I available on the DARC website and handed over to the legal representative. This document was ignored,crumpled up and thrown in the trash!! My TRCV was impounded along with the source, also headphones with a note, that they will be checked by an expert. They also wanted to seize my laptop, which I protected, since the notebook had nothing to do with TRCV, which is supposed to be "controlled". They also took our mobile phones,cameras and diary. They handcuffed us and took us to the police station. The handcuffs were tightened so tightly, that it cut my hands, which I was bleeding. I was taken to the hospital, where my wounds were treated . Due to the lack of a prison cell, they wanted to put me in the detention center, but the attending physician dismissed it. So I spent 4 hours at the police station sitting on a chair. My efforts to visit my disoriented wife were denied with a reason, that she is in a closed guarded hotel room. After a long discussion, I am escorted under the supervision of two policemen to the hotel, where I treated and dressed my wife. My personal care for her incl. I was refused bathing. They took me to the police again, where the "protocol" was already being created. Then we were brought to the court building. It was 11 in the morning. I was photographed in the courtyard and my fingerprints were taken. Then we waited until 4 pm under the supervision of the police, subsequently I was introduced to a lawyer, who explained to me within two minutes, of which I was accused: broadcasting without permission, having a radio with frequencies other than those intended for radio amateur operation/!/and for preventing the release of your laptop!
The discussion was scheduled for the next day at 12:00. I had to wait until 16,00 before the judge and the lawyer came.
The judge told me, that he did not have an interpreter and adjourned the process to the next day at 12:00. When I objected, that we have to fly home the next day, He told me: that's your problem and it's over! The next day I called the German embassy in Athens, who arranged for a German-speaking lawyer to go to the island of Kos. We met an hour before the trial. My luck was, that he was ever interested in amateur radio. I gave him all the documents, which the hotel management kindly printed for us:
CEPT conditions in DARC, also printed in Greek! The proceedings were very busy, the lawyer objected, that he wants to turn to the European Court. The judge adjourned the proceedings, he allowed me to return to Germany and decided, that my legal representative can represent me without my presence at the next hearing. Me and my XYL had no food 16 hours! We were not offered anything. I didn't sleep 34 hours!
All this was the result of an anonymous tip, that I was working without permission and that I was listening to other broadcasts. The prosecution referred to the law from 1929!! I was punished 5 a month's imprisonment with three years' probation for refusing to hand over my laptop and for attempting to deface it.
