Unique technological advantage of FTDX-10
The most significant technical feature of the FTDX-10 is its hybrid SDR architecture. Unlike many current direct sampling transceivers, Yaesu uses a combination of a classic superheterodyne receiver with a first intermediate frequency of 9 MHz and subsequent SDR processing.

The signal first passes through a set of 15 switchable bandpass filters at the receiver input. This is followed by a high-resistance first mixer and three roofing filters. Only after these is digitization and further processing in the FPGA and DSP. This concept significantly reduces the load on the A/D converter with strong off-channel signals and improves the receiver's robustness in very dense traffic. DC4KU tests indicate this architecture as a successful combination of the robustness of an analog receiver and the flexibility of SDR technology.
The practical significance of this concept is particularly evident during contests or when operating from locations with powerful antenna systems, where there are a large number of strong signals near the received station.

From a digital mode perspective, the integrated USB sound card and CAT interface are important, allowing easy connection to WSJT-X, JTDX, Fldigi or N1MM+ programs without an external audio interface.
Reception characteristics in laboratory measurements

Measurement results published Sherwood Engineering ranked the FTDX-10 among the most powerful receivers of its time. The dynamic range at 2 to 20 kHz intervals reaches approximately 107 dB without a preamplifier, which is a value typical of top-of-the-line contest equipment.
The reciprocal mixing RMDR measurements are also very interesting. Sherwood measured 118 dB at a 2.5 kHz spacing, with the value increasing to 126 dB at larger spacings. Such results indicate a very low phase noise of the local oscillator.
Independent measurements DC4KU achieved similar results. At a 2 kHz spacing, the RMDR was measured at 116 dB and the phase noise at approximately −143 dBc/Hz. The test author described these values as excellent and higher than IMD dynamika samotného prijímača.
At a CW bandwidth of 500 Hz, the sensitivity without a preamplifier was approximately −125 to −130 dBm depending on the band. After activating AMP1, it improved to approximately −134 to −140 dBm. At a SSB bandwidth of 2.7 kHz, it was around −120 dBm without a preamplifier and approximately −130 dBm with AMP1.
Third-order dynamics
DC4KU measured a dynamic range of approximately 110 dB in the two-tone IMD3 test and a calculated IP3 of around +40 dBm. These values confirm the receiver's high immunity to intermodulation products from strong neighboring signals.
NPR measurement
An interesting addition to the test was the Noise Power Ratio measurement. The resulting value of 78 dB is among the very good results and indicates that the receiver maintains high linearity even with broadband signal loading. The author of the test emphasizes that NPR provides a more realistic picture of the receiver's behavior than the classic two-tone IMD test.
Transmitter measurements
Power measurements confirmed that the FTDX-10 easily reaches the declared 100 W.
The second harmonic suppression ranged from approximately 68 to 88 dB depending on the band, which meets the requirements for a modern amateur transceiver.
In the two-tone SSB test, IMD3 ranged between 26 and 35 dB depending on the band. The best results were achieved at 7 MHz and 28 MHz.
Spectrum analyzer and ergonomic knowledge

One of the most striking features of the FTDX-10 is its 5-inch touchscreen display with spectrum analyzer and 3DSS mode. The user can work in classic 2D view or in three-dimensional spectrum display.
Early versions of the firmware were criticized for having a limited dynamic range of around 50 dB. Later it turned out that the range could be switched up to 100 dB in the menu, which significantly improved the band overview.
Some users on eHam and Reddit point out the smaller control buttons around the main VFO and the more sensitive volume control, which can cause unwanted frequency shifts. On the other hand, they appreciate the speed of DSP processing, very effective roofing filters, and a quality receiver in difficult conditions.
Suitable add-ons and extensions
SP-30 external speaker

The SP-30 external speaker is one of the most frequently recommended accessories. Sherwood Engineering states that CW and SSB reception quality is noticeably improved when using an external front speaker compared to a speaker placed on the top of the transceiver.
SCU-LAN10
The SCU-LAN10 interface is designed for remote operation. It allows you to control the station via a local network or the Internet and use the Yaesu Remote Operation software.
External monitor
The DVI-D output allows you to connect an external monitor. This is a practical extension of the workspace for contest operation or digital modes.
USB keyboard and mouse
The FTDX-10 supports USB mouse connection, which makes navigating the menu and working with the touch interface much easier.
